Sheriff -

Costilla County is in a rare political transition period because:

• The former sheriff and several deputies were indicted on serious charges

• The sheriff resigned

• The county appointed an interim sheriff (Joe Smith) to stabilize operations

That means 2026 is essentially a “reset election” for law enforcement leadership

Assessor - 

The Assessor role determines property values and impacts:

• property taxes

• valuation appeals

• county revenue base

Also on the ballot:

• County Commissioner seats (District 1-3)

• Clerk & Recorder (critical for elections integrity)

• Treasurer
